Conference on Disaster Resilience: Uniting Disaster Mitigation Stakeholders

The Conference on Disaster Resilience 2024 was held on 15 February 2024 under the theme Uniting Disaster Mitigation Stakeholders. It was hosted with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), with Resqore as co-organiser, and included the release of a conference publication.

Uniting disaster mitigation stakeholders

The premise behind the conference is straightforward. Disaster mitigation in India involves central ministries, state departments, district administrations, research institutions, industry, non-governmental organisations and the communities that live with the risk. Each holds part of the picture and part of the capacity, and they do not routinely work from the same information.

Conferences that bring these groups together are where a research finding becomes a planning decision, and where practitioners compare what has actually worked rather than what was intended to work.

Why disaster resilience needs this

India faces floods, cyclones, earthquakes, landslides, heatwaves, droughts, urban flooding and industrial hazards across very different settings. Rapid urbanisation and infrastructure expansion are changing patterns of exposure faster than plans are revised. Resilience depends on connecting hazard science with land-use planning, infrastructure investment, local governance and community preparedness.
